Chargers Fall to Roadrunners at Home

Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers were hoping to pick up their first home win Wednesday but their plans were ruined after losing a slim first half lead in a 69-74 loss to Rio Hondo. Sophomore forward Jeff Comminey was two rebounds away from a double-double scoring a team high and career high 18 points while grabbing 8 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists. Comminey was 7 for 15 from the field including 4 three-pointers.

Cypress started with the momentum jumping out to a six point lead early in the game. Rio came storming back making it a back and forth first half with eight lead changes. The Chargers were able to take control as the half wound down taking as much as a seven point lead before ending the half up by two. Rio came back in the second half taking the lead for good at the thirteen minute mark. Cypress closed in mounting a comeback when Comminey hit a three-pointer with 1:44 remaining to cut the Rio lead to just one. Cypress would not score again though leaving the Roadrunners with the five point win. The game was lost at the stripe as Cypress gave up 22 points on Rio Hondo free-throws alone while Cypress hit just 4 for 12. Freshman guard Clinton Williams bolstered scoring with 14 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Freshman guard Eric Butler was the third Charger in double digits with 10 and dished out a game high 6 assists. Freshman center Rodrigo Carbajal controlled the boards with a game high 11 rebounds.

Cypress has just a day to recover before heading to the Grossmont Tournament. Cypress starts the tournament Friday against Barstow. Barstow is 3-3 this season coming off of a 82-62 win over Grossmont. The two face off at Grossmont Friday at 8:00 pm.
