Cypress Gives Second Ranked Riverside a Scare

Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers opened Orange Empire Conference play with the top ranked team in the conference. Riverside is ranked second in Southern California making it a tough opening for the Chargers. Cypress trailed the whole way but threatened late to give the Tigers a scare but eventually lost 46-52. Freshman guard Khalif Boyd took over in the second half scoring 17 of his 22 point in the second half while also collecting 7 rebounds.
The Chargers took their first and only lead at the beginning of the game with a layup by sophomore forward Jeff Comminey at the 16:49 mark. The Tigers took over from there going on an 8-2 run. Riverside extended their lead in the first half taking as much as a 13 point lead and headed into the half up 9 over Cypress. Riverside started well in the second half up 12 but Cypress would not go away. The Chargers were down 11 with just 3:39 left on the clock before going on a 7 point run to cut the lead to 4 with just under a minute left. Riverside came back to hit a jumper and Cypress missed on their next two opportunities to suffer the six point loss.
Freshman guard Clinton Williams was the only other Charger in double digits with 10 points on the night and 5 rebounds. Comminey, Eric Butler, and Kourtney Maxim combined for 13 points. Butler also finished with 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
Cypress has a day off before moving on to Friday’s OEC matchup against Orange Coast. OCC is 9-9 on the season and had a bye on Wednesday. The Chargers hope to even their conference record against the Pirates Friday at OCC at 5:30 pm.
