Second Half Rally Not Enough to Finish off the Hornets

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress hosted last place Fullerton Friday night hoping to pick up their first conference. The Chargers fell behind early and could not come back falling to Fullerton 58-68. Freshman forward Kourtney Maxim sparked a second half rally with his hustle picking up 5 second half steals and 2 blocks and 11 points total.
The Chargers started on the wrong foot letting Fullerton go on a 10-2 run to start the game. Cypress was able to cut the lead to two late in the first half but could not hold on as Cypress went down eight to finish the first half 18-26. Fullerton continued their assault to start the second half extending their lead to sixteen. Cypress came back with a 15-5 run topped off by a lay-up by freshman guard Clinton Williams to cut the lead to six. Cypress could not keep the momentum going though as the Hornets took control again going up by as much as seventeen and eventually finishing with the ten point victory.
Williams finished as Cypress’s leading scorer with 17 points and 5 rebounds. Freshman guard Dwayne Wright went four for four from the field for 9 points in just 4 minutes of play. Freshmen guard Eric Butler and Khalif Boyd both picked up 4 assists each.
The Chargers fall to 0-3 in conference and 6-15 overall. They move on to face Irvine Valley next. IVC is in last place at 0-4 in conference, 11-11 overall, and coming off of a 51-59 loss to Orange Coast. The two face off at Irvine Valley Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
