Chargers Slip in Second Half in Loss at Santa Ana

Santa Ana, Calif. – The Chargers looked poised for a possible upset in the first half against the Dons of Santa Ana Friday night but could not keep the pace in the second. Cypress allowed 62 second half points from the Dons in the eventual 101-72 loss, their second loss to Santa Ana this season. Sophomore forward Jeff Comminey scored 14 points going 5 for 10 from the field to pace Cypress.

The Dons took the lead early but Cypress would not go away eventually taking the lead with 4:12 left in the first half. Santa Ana came back with a 9-2 run the end the half up 39-34. Santa Ana came out firing in the second going 7 for 8 to start the half on a 13-0 run. The closest Cypress would get would be a 12 point spread but Santa Ana kept extending on their lead scoring 62 second half points handing Cypress the 29 point loss.

Freshman guard Khalif Boyd ended the night with a double-double with a team high 16 points and 10 rebounds in addition to 4 steals and 3 assists. Freshman guard Clinton Williams was the Chargers’ second leading scorer with 15 and 6 rebounds. Freshmen Eric Butler and Rodrigo Carbajal combined for 16 points and 9 rebounds.

Cypress falls to 0-5 in conference and prepares for their last first round game. They have a few days off before hosting first place Saddleback. The Gauchos are undefeated in conference, 18-5 overall, and coming off of a 75-61 win over Orange Coast and a thrilling one point victory over top ranked Riverside earlier in the week. The teams face off Wednesday at Cypress at 5:30 pm.
