Comeback Efforts not enough to Take out the Pirates

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress hosted Orange Coast Wednesday night hoping for their first conference win. Cypress fell behind early and made a surge in the end but it was not enough as Cypress lost to OCC 64-70. Sophomore forward Jeff Comminey put up 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds to pace the Chargers.

The Chargers dug themselves a hole early falling behind 20-7 early. OCC took their largest lead at the 4:18 mark in the first half up 17. Cypress closed out the first half with a 9-3 run finishing the first half down 11, 23-34. Cypress came out in the second half with the momentum on a 9-2 run to cut the Pirate lead to just two. Foul trouble gave Cypress some trouble and the Pirates extended their lead again to 12 with 7:16 left in the game. The Chargers would not give up going on an 8-0 run late in the game to cut the lead to just one with 1:14 left in the game. Cypress was called for a foul immediately after and the Pirates converted forcing Cypress to foul more to stop the clock and lost eventually by six.

Freshman guard Clinton Williams added 13 points and 5 rebounds before fouling out while freshman guard Orlando Isais finished with 11 points, 3 steals, and 5 rebounds. Freshmen Khalif Boyd and David Holliday combined for 15 points and 5 assists.

Cypress has a bye Friday and continue play next Wednesday night against Fullerton. The last time they met, Cypress lost to the Hornets at home by ten. Fullerton is currently 3-5 in conference in fifth place. The two meet up again at 7:30 pm at Fullerton next Wednesday.
