Chargers take the Lasers to Double Overtime

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress looked poised for an upset hosting the Lasers and holding the lead throughout. Irvine Valley fought back and extended the game two extra periods handing Cypress a disappointing one point loss, 73-74. Sophomore forward Jeff Comminey celebrated his birthday hitting six three-pointers on the way to 19 points while playing in all 50 minutes of the game.
The action started slow as the teams were locked scoreless for almost three minutes until IVC was finally able to score. From there, it was back and forth with several lead changes. Cypress was finally able to go on a run going 13-2 in the middle of the half to take as much as a nine point lead. IVC went on a 11-3 run of their own to cut into the lead to one to end the half 26-25 in Cypress’s favor. The first half was littered with seven lead changes and one tie.
The second half proved to be more of the same with ten lead changes. Cypress started with the lead and held it through most of the half until giving it up at the 6:14 mark. It was a back and forth battle from there. With Cypress down by two with just twelve seconds to go, freshman guard Clinton Williams hit an and-one jumper to tie the game and hit the free throw to go up by one. The Lasers were undeterred drawing a foul and hitting a free-throw and end the game tied up at 60 to end regulation.
The Chargers were headed to overtime and started with the lead. IVC took a brief one point lead before Cypress took it back up by two. The Lasers hit two free-throws to finish the first overtime locked up at 65. In the second overtime, IVC decided to take charge early going up three. Cypress came back with a three-pointer by Comminey to tie it back up and hit two free throws to go up two. IVC came back with a three pointer to go up one. Cypress came back with a lay-up by Williams to go up one. IVC would miss their next attempt giving the Chargers control of the ball with just 48 seconds left. A pivotal offensive foul would turn the ball over to IVC and they hit a lay-up at the buzzer giving IVC the one point victory after 24 lead changes.
Williams would finish the game with a game and career high 29 points. Freshman guard Eric Butler added a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds to go along with 6 assists. Freshman center Rodrigo Carbajal added 8 points and 7 rebounds.
Cypress falls to 0-10 in conference with two games remaining. They have the weekend to recover before hosting Santa Ana on Wednesday. The last time they met, Cypress stayed competitive before giving up a big first half to the Dons to lose 72-101. This is their third meeting with the Dons this season. The two will face off again on Wednesday for Cypress’s last home game at 7:30 pm.
