Lead Slips Away in Loss to the Dons

Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers hosted Santa Ana in their last home game of the season. Cypress lost to the Dons the last time around by 29 but Cypress would not allow it on their home court. The Chargers fought for the lead late but could not hold on losing to the Dons 81-85. Freshman guard Clinton Williams put up a career night playing all 40 minutes for a career high 33 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double.

The Dons grabbed the lead early and jumped out to as much as a 10 point lead in the first half. Cypress fought to stay close finishing the half on a 7-0 run to tie it at the half 40-40. The second half started in a back and forth battle with Cypress finally taking the reigns at the 13:05 mark. The Chargers led by as much as six but the Dons would not surrender going on a 13-2 run to take the six point lead with just 1:24 left in the game. Cypress would fight and freshman guard David Holliday hit a three-pointer at the buzzer but it was not enough as the Chargers lost by four.

Sophomore forward Jeff Comminey had another hot outside shooting night with his second straight night with six three-pointers for 18 points before fouling out. Holliday and freshman guard Eric Butler combined for 18 points and 6 assists.

Cypress has a day off before their last game of the season against Saddleback. The seventh ranked Gauchos are tied for first in conference at 9-2 and coming off of a two point win over Orange Coast. The last time these teams played, Cypress lost by 19. The two face off again Friday at Saddleback at 7:30 pm for Cypress’s last game of the 2006-07 season.
