Cypress, Calif. – Cypress hosted their first home game of the 2007-08 season in what turned out to be a barn burner. After getting off to a slow start, Cypress climbed back from a seventeen point first half deficit to pass the century mark and defeat San Bernardino Valley 102-91. Freshman forward Sean Starkey had a banner night putting up 37 points to lead all scorers while adding ten rebounds. He got there going 15-24 on the day including five three-pointers.

The Chargers jumped out to a narrow lead but gave it up quickly with the Wolverines taking over the lead after eight minutes of play. San Bernardino took over with a smothering press going on a 25-7 run to take a seventeen point lead over Cypress with nine minutes left in the first half. The Chargers hit right back with a 26-8 run of their own over the next eight minutes capped off by a three-point bucket by freshman point guard Justin Nguyen to take the one point lead. Cypress was able to extend it to a 51-47 lead at half.

The Chargers were able to hold on to their lead throughout the second half extending it to as much as fourteen at one point. Starkey hit a layup with just twenty seconds remaining to give Cypress their 100th point. Twenty seconds later Cypress finished with the 102-91 win.

Cypress boasted several impressive individual efforts. Freshman forward Devon McDonald was the second Charger with a double-double finishing with 20 points and a game high 14 rebounds. Sophomore guard Khalif Boyd followed with 18 points. Nguyen was three short of a single game assist record with 11 while adding eight points.

The Chargers improve to 2-2. They will head back on the road starting with a road game against a high-scoring Chaffey squad. Chaffey is 1-2 on the season coming off of a 117-91 win over Santa Ana. Cypress and Chaffey meet up on Saturday at 3:00 pm at Chaffey.
