Fouls Prove Fatal in Charger Loss

Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. – Cypress was coming off of an exciting home opener win Thursday and headed off to face the high scoring Panthers of Chaffey Saturday on the road. Cypress fell behind quickly and struggled to keep up in the 91-80 loss. Freshman forward Devon McDonald logged his second straight double-double putting up a game high 23 points and ten rebounds along with three blocks.

The Chargers got off to a rough start allowing Chaffey to take a fifteen point lead at half. Cypress fought back outscoring Chaffey by four in the second half but it was not enough losing by eleven. The difference was made in free throws and three-pointers. Cypress converted six more field goals than Chaffey but allowed twice as many free-throws from Chaffey getting outscored 23-9 from the stripe. Cypress was also out-done from the three-point line allowing 14 Chaffey threes compared to Cypress’s five.

Freshman forward Sean Starkey made it another double-digit night scoring 18 points for Cypress including four three-pointers. Sophomore guard Khalif Boyd finished with 17 while going eight for eleven from the field.

Cypress falls to 2-3 on the season and has a few days off before heading to El Camino. El Camino is 3-2 coming off of a one point loss to Victor Valley. The two will face off Wednesday night at El Camino at 5:00 pm.
