Rally Falls Short in Second Round Loss

El Cajon, Calif. – Cypress moved on to the second round of the Grossmont Tournament to face Southwestern in the semifinals. After a late second half comeback, Cypress fell just short of forcing overtime losing 79-76. Freshman guard DuWayne King led the Charger scorers with 18 points, four steals and three assists.
Southwestern and Cypress battled through the first half and Cypress fell behind by ten with 1:21 left in the game. The Chargers stormed back and came within three of Southwestern. A last second Charger three-point attempt fell short as Cypress lost by three. Sophomore guard Khalif Boyd finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Eric Butler was right behind Boyd with 15 points and six rebounds while adding three assists. Freshman forward Sean Starkey was the fourth Charger in double digits with 14 while blocking three shots.
Cypress falls to 4-5 on the season and moves on to the third place game Sunday against host Grossmont. Grossmont is 5-4 and coming off of an 87-64 second round loss to Desert. The teams will face off for third Sunday at 4:00 pm.
