Early Lead Doesn’t Hold as Chargers Drop Second Straight

El Cajon, Calif. – The Chargers faced host Grossmont trying to earn a third place finish in the Griffins’ tournament. Cypress started with an early lead but let it slip losing 78-72. Sophomore guard Khalif Boyd led Cypress with 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Cypress jumped out to an early ten point lead in the first half but Grossmont stormed back to take the 38-35 lead heading into halftime. The Griffins took over in the second half extending their lead to as much as thirteen midway through the second half. Cypress would not give in going on a run of their own cutting the Grossmont lead to just three with 2:31 left in the game. Grossmont held Cypress off from there for the six point win.

Freshman forward Sean Starkey finished with 16 points while fellow freshman forward Devon McDonald had thirteen. Sophomore guard Eric Butler neared a double-double with eleven rebounds and nine points.

Cypress takes a few days off before starting another tournament, this time in Santa Barbara. Cypress will open the tournament against Oxnard. Oxnard is 3-8 and coming off of a 83-79 loss to Glendale. The teams will kick off action Thursday at 9:00 pm.
