Chargers Pull off a Major Upset in Win over L.A. City

Cypress upends the favorite L.A. City.

Los Angeles, Calif. – Unranked Cypress had a large task on their hands Saturday night facing the heavily favored fourth ranked Cubs of L.A. City on L.A. City’s home court. With nothing to lose, Cypress put up a team performance with very few mistakes to upend the favorite L.A. City 88-82. Freshman guard DuWayne King came up big nearing a double-double with nine assists, 14 points, and seven rebounds.

The game began as expected with L.A. City taking the early lead. Cypress would not go away though staying close down by five at the 9:42 mark. From there the Chargers went on a 7-0 run to take the lead and hold on to it throughout the rest of the night. Cypress held on by avoiding mistakes making just eight turnovers all game for the six point victory.

Freshman forward Sean Starkey led Cypress in scoring with seven three-pointers for 25 points on the night while adding six rebounds. Sophomore guard Khalif Boyd was also in the twenties with 22 points and threes steals. Sophomore guard Eric Butler was Cypress’s fourth man in double-digits with 10 points in addition to three assists and seven rebounds.

Cypress improves to 7-8 and has the holiday break to celebrate their upset until returning to action on December 27th. The Chargers will head south to Grossmont for their final tournament of the year. They will open action with 14th ranked Glendale. Glendale is 8-4 coming off of a 70-67 loss to Antelope Valley. The teams will face off Thursday December 27th at Grossmont College at 4:00 pm.
