Chargers Avenge Earlier Loss for Consolation Championship

Boyd poured in a career high 36 points Saturday night.
Cypress lost to Grossmont 78-72 earlier this season.

San Diego, Calif. – Cypress entered the last day of competition in the San Diego Mesa Tournament Saturday against a familiar foe, the Grossmont Griffins. The Chargers lost to Grossmont earlier this season 78-72 in the competitive third place game of the Grossmont tournament. This time around, Cypress snatched up the narrow win scoring 93 points winning 93-89. Sophomore guard Khalif Boyd led the way going 11-20 from the field including six three-pointers for a career high 36 points.

The Chargers took the lead early taking the 45-38 lead in the first half. They were able to then hold on for the slim four point win. Sophomore guard Eric Butler paced the Chargers with 20 points and three steals. Freshman forward Sean Starkey added 15 points and six rebounds.

Cypress evens their record to 9-9 earning the consolation championship. The Chargers will have one more non-conference match to warm up for the tough Orange Empire Conference. Cypress will finish the pre-season with eighth ranked Citrus. Citrus is 17-1 and is on a five game win streak. Cypress will go for the upset Friday at 5:00 pm at Citrus.
