Cypress, Calif. – Cypress opened up Orange Empire Conference play Wednesday night hosting Santa Ana hoping to start on the right foot with a win. After nineteen lead changes in an up and down game, Cypress gave up the lead for good losing 90-83. Freshman forward
Sean Starkey led all scorers with 30 points including six three-pointers while also making it a double-double with 11 rebounds.
The Chargers jumped out to a narrow lead but the Dons were never far behind. Santa Ana finally caught up taking the lead at the 6:41 mark of the first half for the first of many lead changes. The two battled through the rest of the first half until freshman guard
DuWayne King hit a jumper with thirteen seconds remaining in the first half giving Cypress the slim 43-41 lead at half. Cypress and Santa Ana continued the tug-of-war in the second half until the 3:50 mark when Santa Ana took the lead for good. Cypress stayed close but was forced to foul as time ran out leading to the seven point loss.

Devon McDonald put up Cypress’s second double-double with a game high 13 rebounds and 15 points before fouling out. Sophomore guard
Khalif Boyd was Cypress’s second leading scorer with 18 in addition to five rebounds. King also reached double-digits with ten on the night along with four assists.
The Chargers fall to 9-11 on the season and 0-1 in conference. They will have a chance to grab their first conference win Friday against Orange Coast. The Pirates are 4-14 and are coming off of a 71-39 loss to Irvine Valley. The two will face off Friday at Orange Coast at 5:30 pm.
