Mission Viejo, Calif. – On January 26, 2000, Bill Clinton was preparing for his final State of the Union Address. It also marked the last time Cypress would defeat Saddleback until today. The Chargers broke a sixteen game losing streak to the Gauchos Friday night with a convincing 94-73 win. Freshman guard Ryan Nitta had a breakout game for the Chargers doubling his season high with ten points and five assists going four-for-four from the floor.

Saddleback jumped out to the lead to start the game but Cypress quickly retaliated to take the lead 7-6 at the 13:31 mark. From there, the teams battled through the first half with eleven lead changes and eleven ties. Cypress took the lead to close the first half with a layup by sophomore guard Khalif Boyd and then a jumper by freshman forward Thomas Lopshire for the 38-34 lead at half. Cypress would not turn back from there jumping out to a 13 point lead in the first three minutes of the second half. The Charger lead swelled as the half went on as they coasted to a 21 point win.

Freshman guard Sean Starkey led all scorers with 22 points going 10 for 11 from the field along with seven rebounds. Boyd followed with 21 points. Sophomore guard Eric Butler added 18 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard DuWayne King and freshman forward Devon McDonald combined for 14 points, seven assists, and eight rebounds.
