Cypress, Calif. – Cypress was hoping to debut at home last week with a win but was disappointed after a double-overtime marathon. This time, the Chargers did not disappoint collecting their first home win with an 80-72 victory over Rio Hondo. Sophomore forward Sean Starkey led the Chargers with a team high 18 points including five three-pointers and added eight rebounds.

The Chargers had a rough start as none of their shots seemed to fall giving the Roadrunners a seven point lead 26-19. Cypress found their mark storming back on a 16 point run kicked off by Starkey for a nine point lead that led to a 40-28 lead at half. The run seemed to be the difference for Cypress as the second half became a tug-of-war. Cypress had as much as a 16 point lead before Rio Hondo chipped away at the lead to come within three with under three minutes remaining. Cypress remained strong staying ahead to win by eight.

Sophomore forward John Staats picked up a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds. Sophomore guard Justin Nguyen dished out six assists along with six points. Freshman forward Baron McCray was efficient going five-for-six from the field for 11 points and 8 rebounds in just 18 minutes on the floor.

Cypress improves to 3-4 and will prepare to head back out for another long road stint. The Chargers will start with the Grossmont Tournament where they will take on College of the Desert in the first round. Desert is 4-2 coming off of a 111-97 win over Citrus. The two will face off at 8:00 pm on Friday at Grossmont.
