Cypress Falls in Consolation Championship

Los Angeles, Calif. – The Chargers spent their pre-holiday weekend in Los Angeles in an eight team tournament. Cypress bookended their weekend with losses finishing 1-2 losing in the consolation championship. They started the weekend with a loss to LA Pierce before defeating Desert for the second time this season, and then losing to Victor Valley. Freshman guard Tim Austin led Cypress as the Chargers’ leading scorer in all three games averaging 17.7 points per game.

Cypress started the weekend with LA Pierce and jumped out to a 12 point lead in the first half. They gave up the lead quickly and Pierce led the rest of the way as Cypress lost 87-79. Austin finished with 20 points while sophomore forward Devon McDonald followed with 12.

In the consolation bracket, the Chargers met up with Desert for the second time this season. Cypress led the whole way for the 97-75 win. Austin finished with 18 points while sophomore center John Staats had a double-double with 11 points and rebounds. McDonald added 14 while sophomore guard Sean Starkey contributed 12 points.

The Chargers met up with Victor Valley in the consolation championships. After a back and forth battle, Victor Valley took a big lead midway through the second half that led to a 90-84 defeat of Cypress. Austin, Staats, and freshman guard Devon Adams all had 15 points while sophomore guard DuWayne King pitched in 12.

Cypress falls to 8-9 and has a week off before heading south for the San Diego Mesa Tournament. The Chargers are set up for a direct rematch against Victor Valley as they face the Rams again in the opening round of the tournament. The two will face off again at 4:00 pm on Sunday at San Diego Mesa.
