Cypress Avenges Earlier Loss with Strong First Half

McDonald produced a double-double Friday night.
The Chargers picked up their first conference win by defeating Santa Ana.

Santa Ana, Calif. – Just over a week ago, Cypress took on Santa Ana in a tournament championship and lost by six. This time around, Cypress was fueled by the previous loss and jumped out to an early lead to hit the century mark and take the 100-86 win. Sophomore forward Devon McDonald paced Cypress with his second straight double-double (15 points, 12 rebounds).

The Chargers started aggressive and pushed themselves out to a big first half lead 62-42. Santa Ana started to chip away in the second half but the Chargers kept them at a distance maintaining a double-digit lead through the second half to win by 14.

Sophomore guard DuWayne King led Cypress with 19 points and seven assists. Freshman guard Tim Austin was right behind King with 18 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore center John Staats took it to his previous team with 15 points while freshman guard Nick Becker followed with 13.

Cypress improves to 11-11 and 1-1 in conference. The Chargers have a bye Wednesday and move on to their next opponent Friday when they will host Orange Coast. OCC is 8-12 and 1-0 in conference coming off of an 86-83 win over Irvine Valley. The two will meet up Friday at 7:30 pm at Cypress.
