Chargers Unable to Stop Hornet Scoring

Staats hit three three-pointers Wednesday night.
Cypress finishes the first half of conference even at 3-3.

Cypres, Calif. – The Chargers hosted district rivals Fullerton Wednesday night to close out the first half of OEC play. Cypress could not stop the Hornets’ hot shooting as the Chargers lost 104-90. Sophomore center John Staats paced Cypress with 14 points including three three-pointers and five rebounds.

Fullerton wrested control of the game early jumping out to an 18 point lead in the first half. Cypress finished the half strong cutting the Hornet lead to 11 at half (51-40). The Chargers kept chipping away to eliminate Fullerton’s safe lead and get within four with 12:52 left in the game. FCC woke up and extended their lead further and finished with the 14 point win.

Freshman guard Tim Austin led Cypress with 17 points and six assists followed by 16 points and five assists from sophomore guard DuWayne King. Freshman guard Nick Becker also hit three three-pointers on the way to 13 points. Sophomore forward Sean Starkey added 12 points.

Cypress finishes the first half of conference 3-3 in fourth place behind a three way tie for first. The Chargers start all over again Friday as they take on first place Riverside. Cypress lost to Riverside the first time around 94-88. Riverside is 21-5 and 5-1 in conference coming off of a 71-57 upset of Saddleback. The Tigers will host Cypress Friday at 5:30 pm.
