Cypress Opens the Season with a Third Place Tournament Finish

San Diego, Calif. – The Chargers began their 2009-10 season over the weekend heading to San Diego City for a three game, eight team tournament. Cypress came out with two wins for the third place finish. Sophomore guard Brett Spencer made his Cypress debut with 76 points over the weekend including 15 three-pointers to earn all-tournament honors.
Cypress opened the tournament taking on the host San Diego City Knights. Cypress jumped ahead early but almost gave up the lead going into half. They held on and extended their lead on the way to the 101-97 win. Freshman forward Devin Golston led Cypress going 11 for 16 from the field for 26 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Tim Austin added 20 followed by 19 from Spencer. Freshman guard E.J. Singleton added 13.
The Chargers headed into the semifinals next to take on Chaffey. This time Cypress fell behind early and could not catch up losing to the Panthers 107-96. Spencer hit seven three-pointers and finished with 35 points. Golston neared a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds. Freshman forward Nick DeMusis and freshman guard Reggie Abrams both added 15 points each and combined for eight assists.
Cypress played in the third place game Sunday taking on Napa Valley. Cypress took the lead and held it for the 79-65 win. Spencer scored 22 points with eight rebounds while Golston added 20 and grabbed seven rebounds. Abrams finished the game with 15.
Cypress (2-1) has a few days off before their home court debut. They will host Pasadena on Thursday at Cypress at 7:00 pm.
