Chargers Denied First Conference Win in Loss to Fullerton

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress was hoping for its first conference win Friday night hosting fellow winless district rivals, Fullerton. The Chargers and Hornets battled through forty minutes of play but Fullerton took the advantage late dealing Cypress the 82-75 loss. In a game of thirteen ties and ten lead changes, Cypress’s turnovers were costly outscored 23-15 in points off of turnovers. Freshman guard Zack Zaragoza led Cypress with six three-pointers on the way to 22 points and six rebounds.
The lead see-sawed in the first half but Cypress was able to take the largest lead by either team in the game at the 4:40 mark with a thirteen point run to take a ten point lead. Fullerton stormed right back and ended the half in a 32-32 tie.
The tug-of-war continued in the second half with six more ties until Fullerton took the lead for good midway through the second half. Cypress stayed close in the chase coming as close as three with just fourteen seconds remaining but could not close the gap losing by seven.
All five starters scored in double digits. Freshman forward Marquise Washington poured in twelve points while freshman guard Andre Winn and sophomore guard Reggie Abrams added eleven points each. Winn also picked up five assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Michael Knight contributed ten points and seven rebounds.
Cypress (10-9, 0-3) will have the weekend off before heading back on the road to take on Orange Coast. OCC is 1-2 in conference coming off of a forty point loss to Saddleback. Cypress and Orange Coast face off Wednesday at Orange Coast at 7:30 pm.
