Chargers Capture Third at State Championships

Beaumont, Calif. - Cypress traveled to Beaumont Monday as a team to take on the top teams in the state for the season finale in the State Championship tournament. The Chargers came out of the gate hot leading halfway through and then finished the tournament in third place with a team score of 754, just nine strokes over the tournament winner West Hills. As the fourth seed coming out of Southern California, Cypress upset five other teams to take home third.
The Chargers started in the first round strong in overcast conditions. Freshman Caio Barbosa led Cypress coming out of the first round with a one over par 73. Freshman Nick Garrett and sophomore Scott Sexton followed with 74s. The rest of the team came in at 77 or under to finish with a team score of 372 after the first round to take the lead just one stroke under the Chabot in second.
Cypress could not keep the pace going in the second round. Sexton went one-under par in the second round and finished with a team best 145 to finish eighth among the individual field of sixty. Garrett was consistent with another 74 finishing with a 148 and tenth among individuals. Freshman Mike O’Neil improved on his first round score shooting for par in the second round.
Cypress finishes the season third in the state, fourth in regionals, and second on the Orange Empire Conference.
