Two Goal Charger Lead Slips Away in 2-2 Season Opening Draw

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress opened its 2010 season Friday taking on Southwestern at home in a rematch of the 2009 season opener that ended in a 5-5 draw. The Chargers came out strong taking a 2-0 lead but gave away two goals ending in a 2-2 tie. Freshman defender Omar Hernandez scored Cypress’s first goal of the year to kick off the scoring.
The Chargers came out attacking early on keeping the Jaguars on defense and taking a few shots on goal. Cypress finally broke through in the waning minutes of the first half. Hernandez scored in transition with an assist from sophomore defender Cesar Ramirez to take the 1-0 lead going into halftime. Cypress kept attacking to start the second half. Sophomore forward Bryan Arguello came up the right side and ricocheted a ball off the Jaguar defender into the 59th minute goal giving Cypress the 2-0 lead.
Cypress defense became lapse with the lead and Southwestern scored immediately in transition to cut the lead in half. The Chargers defended against the equalizer until Southwestern earned a corner kick in the 88th minute. An inadvertent whistle froze the Charger defense and the corner kick bounced in to tie it up 2-2. Freshman keeper Jarrod Rice made his collegiate debut making five saves on the day.
Cypress (0-0-1) will take the weekend off to regroup and return to action at home Tuesday. The Chargers will host Chaffey Tuesday at 4:00 pm at Cypress.
