Cypress Edges out Chaffey for the First Win of 2010

Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers came into their second game of the season Tuesday looking for redemption after giving away a win in their first game against Southwestern. Cypress battled it out against Chaffey but earned a decisive goal in the second half and held on for a 1-0 win. Sophomore midfielder Ricardo Alvarado scored the game winning goal, his first of the year.
Cypress and Chaffey battled back and forth sharing control of the ball throughout the first half ending in a scoreless halftime. The Chargers were more aggressive in the second half with more chances at the goal. Cypress broke through in the 73rd minute as sophomore forward Carlos Quiñones crossed the ball into the box for Alvarado who scored. Cypress had to hold on from there to avoid the same result as Friday. The Panthers threatened late including two shots on goal in stoppage time but freshman keeper Jarrod Rice made some clutch saves to maintain the shutout. Rice finished with 13 saves.
Cypress (1-0-1) has over a week off before heading on the road. The Chargers will play its first road game Wednesday at Mira Costa at 4:00 pm.
