Cypress, Calif. - Brett Mackay's second half goal lifted Cypress College (5-7-4, 3-4-3) to a 1-0 Orange Empire Conference victory over Santiago Canyon College at home on Friday.
Cypress goalie Max Moreno made the Chargers' lead standup by stopping all six shots the Hawks took in the game.
The Chargers stayed on the attack for most of the match, finishing with a 17-6 margin in total shots. None were bigger than Mackay's unassisted score after the break, when he dribbled by a few SCC defenders, squared up from 15 yards out, and found the back of the net with the eventual game-winning goal.
With only five matches left to go coming into the game, Cypress knew that to have any chance at a playoff berth, it must win out. If the Chargers can run the table and win their final four games, they still may have a shot at the postseason.
The Chargers play three out of their last four OEC matchups away from home, beginning with a match at Fullerton on Tuesday, November 1. They return home to host Orange Coast College at 3 p.m. on Friday, November 4, in their final home match of the season, then close out their 2011 regular season schedule with a pair of road contests at Riverside, November 8, and Irvine Valley on November 11.
