Chargers Edge out Santa Barbara, Stay Undefeated

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress closed out a long week Friday taking on their third opponent since Tuesday. The Chargers faced their toughest challenge in Santa Barbara City and escaped with a 5-4 win. Cypress halted Santa Barbara’s three game win streak. "This was a great team effort that we showed today,” said head coach Jeff Benito. “We knew this match would be tough especially because it was the third match for us this week and Santa Barbara only had us to prepare for. I'm very proud of how we responded today." Freshman Danilo Kelen won a hard-fought three set match in the six spot.
The Chargers were able to get ahead in singles. Sophomores Deondre Moss and Shane Patel started it off with two wins. Moss bounced back from a 6-0 first set loss to win in three. Patel came back from his first career singles loss on Thursday win decisively 6-1, 6-2 in the number two spot. After losing in the first spot, Kelen picked up Cypress’s third win followed by Gabriel Dias in the fourth spot. Cypress emerged from singles with a 4-2 lead needing just one in doubles to clench the match.
Santa Barbara caught up tying up the match at 4-4 after winning in the number one and three spot of doubles. It came down to Dias and sophomore Derek Porter. The two emerged with an 8-3 win clenching the match for Cypress.
Cypress (8-0) has some time off before heading on the road for another conference match. The Chargers will take on fellow 2009 OEC Co-Champs Riverside. The two will face off Thursday at Riverside at 2:00 pm.
