Cypress shutout Riverside 9-0 for the second time this season.
April 1, 2011
Riverside, Calif. - Cypress traveled to Riverside to take on the Tigers who are tied for second place with Orange Coast in the Orange Empire Conference. The Chargers battled tough heat and a highly motivated Tiger team on their home court to come away with another 9-0 shutout victory over RCC.
The Tigers (12-4, 6-3) stood toe-to-toe with the Chargers (16-2, 8-0) to start the match, not letting Cypress get much separation in the first set on every court. However, sophomore Gabriel Dias leading 3-2 began the surge for Cypress as he pulled away in his match to defeat his opponent 6-2, 6-2 to give Cypress a 1-0 lead. Fellow sophomore and captain Torsten Keil-Long, playing in the No. 3 singles position, wasn't far behind as he pulled ahead, also from 3-2, to win the next nine games straight to give Cypress point number two.
The Chargers were meeting tough resistance from Riverside as they kept the match close on the other courts. Cypress was able to dig in and hold of the Tiger's charge. At No. 4 Singles, Joakim Nordmar, dismantled his opponent in the second set to win his match 6-4, 6-2. He was followed by Charger's No. 1 singles player, Oliver Andrzejczuk, who fought a very athletic and speedy Jharen Gines, defeating him 6-3, 6-1, and finally freshman Dhanuk Withana brought the match home for the Chargers by denying Spencer Melendez his comeback attempt in the first set by winning his match 6-4, 6-1. Cypress had the match won with a 5-0 score.
Freshman Mark Mahan was still battling in the first set of his match when he was able to secure the first set tie-breaker 7-6 (7-1 in the tie-breaker) and then ran away with the second set, rolling over Theo Arruda by dialing-off six straight games to give Cypress a sweep of singles and a 6-0 edge.
In doubles, the Chargers continued to dominate.
In the No. 3 doubles position, freshman Eric Ballesteros and sophomore Danilo Kelen took apart the Tiger's No. 3 team and turned in an 8-3 score. Freshman duo Sean De Young and BK Fernandez got the green light to go at the No. 2 doubles position, and battled a tough team in Arruda and Carvalho. The freshmen duo were able to stay strong by using superior serving to take the match 8-5. Finally, sophomore Dias and freshman Withana stepped in at the No. 1 doubles position. Dias and Withana had a tough task taking on the Riverside No. 1 team, but were able to break the serve of Tiger No. 1 Gines to take a 5-4 lead. The match was still hotly contested, but the Charger pair proved to be too tough and took the match 8-5.
Cypress shuts out the Tigers for the second time this season and is the only team to do so thus far. The Chargers have the weekend off and prepare for district rival Fullerton on Tuesday in a match at Fullerton, before their Orange Empire Conference finale with Orange Coast at 2 p.m. at Cypress on Thursday, April 7.
