Chargers Close Out Regular Season Undefeated

Gabrial DiasDias won his singles and doubles matches in the season finale victory over Orange Coast.

Cypress won its third-straight Orange Empire Conference title by running the table with a perfect 10-0 record in league play.

April 7, 2011

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress goes undefeated for the second year-in-a-row in OEC play with a 7-2 win over Orange Coast at Cypress College in the conference finale for both teams. Cypress also finished off a dominant 10-0 run in OEC play to put together back-to-back undefeated seasons.

Windy conditions made it tough for both teams to get much rhythm, however, the Chargers (18-2, 10-0) were able to gain control of the match first, and didn't look back. Freshman Dhanuk Withana gave Cypress a lead over the Pirates (11-6, 7-3) with a shutout victory at the No. 5 position.

Charger No. 1 Oliver Andrzejczuk turned in a great performance, dismissing a tough challenge from his opponent 6-2, 6-2.  Giving Cypress its third point of the match was Mark Mahan who jumped out to an early lead, and held off Pat Wright from Orange Coast to earn a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Sophomore Gabriel Dias scored the Chargers' fourth point of the afternoon with a stellar victory at No. 6 singles. Dias defeated former Charger Aaron Lester 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore captain Torsten Keil-Long brought it home with his victory at the No. 3 singles position by defeating a tough opponent in Rex Miller 6-2, 6-4.

Freshman Joakim Nordmar played well, and was looking to help the Chargers sweep the singles competition, but the windy conditions, and the play of Orange Coast's Jesse Chen were too much for Nordmar to overcome in 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 defeat.

The Chargers went into doubles play with the match in hand. They continued their solid play, and much like singles, got off to a quick start. The Chargers' came out of the gate quickly with wins at the No. 6 and No. 2 doubles spots. The duo of Dias and Withana played outstanding, while Keil-Long and Andrzejczuk secured the 7-2 team win for Cypress with a convincing victory at No. 1 doubles, 8-5.

At No. 3 doubles, the tandem of Mahan and Nordmar fought back from down 3-6, to get within 6-7, but came up a little short in their bid to salvage the match when they weren't able to break the serve of Gregory Villicana.

The Chargers hit the road this weekend when they travel to Ventura College to take on the Pirates on Saturday in a much anticipated match between two of the top teams in the state. Ventura came into this season as defending state champions.
