April 19, 2011
Cypress, Calif. - Cypress College opened up the first round of the Southern California Dual Team Regional Playoffs with a convincing 5-2 home victory against Glendale College at the Cypress College Tennis Center on Tuesday.
Having faced Glendale before, the Chargers (21-2) knew what to expect and came out fast. Cypress was looking to end it in singles, however, Glendale (9-10) showed some fight and took the match to doubles.
Every player on Cypress had a lead early in the match, as Cypress's top three singles players opened up with 4-1 leads in the first sets of their matches. In the bottom three positions, the Chargers were in control, as Joakim Nordmar and Dhanuk Withana captured their first sets 6-0. Meanwhile, Dias was battling in a 3-2 match at the No. 6 position.
The Chargers struck first with Withana's point at No. 5 singles, defeating his opponent 6-0, 6-2. He was followed quickly by Nordmar 6-0, 6-1 to give the Chargers a 2-0 team lead.
Sophomores Gabriel Dias and Torsten Keil-Long kept the offense going for the Chargers. Dias dispatched his opponent 6-3, 6-1, and Keil-Long fended off his opponent's come-back attempts with a 6-4, 6-1 victory to give Cypress a 4-0 lead.
Glendale fought back at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions. Both Mark Mahan and Oliver Andrzejczuk had built 4-1 leads, both watched as those leads dwindled away when Glendale's top two players mounted furious comebacks to up-end the Chargers' top two players. Mahan fell 6-4, 6-4, while Andrzecjzuk dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision.
Cypress went into doubles with a 4-2 lead and all three Cypress doubles teams came out hard and quick to build huge leads that Glendale had no answer to. Finally, at No. 3 doubles, the freshman pair of Mahan and Nordmar gave Cypress the go-ahead point to clinch the victory for the Chargers. The duo cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory, and closed out the match when Nordmar hit a forehand shot up the middle that found daylight between the two Glendale players for the win.
Cypress will host Mt. San Jacinto College on Tuesday, April 26 in the Semi-Finals of the Southern California Dual-Team Championships. Mt. San Jacinto was a 5-2 winner over No. 5 Cerritos College in Hemet on Tuesday. Cypress closed out its regular season with a 7-2 victory over Mt. San Jacinto on April 12.
