2011 Self Study Available

Cypress College's 2011 Institutional Self Study is now complete. The document supports the upcoming accreditation site visit, which will take place in March, 2011.

The 270-page document was officially endorced by Trustees of the North Orange County Community College District during the December 14, 2010 meeting.

Scholarship Applications Now Available

The Cypress College Foundation Scholarship applications are now available. This year, we have two separate scholarship applications. The first covers most of the various scholarships that the Foundation administers each year (many of these awards go to multiple winners - some as many as twenty from one scholarship). This application is due to be turned in at the Financial Aid office before 5 pm on Monday, February 28, 2011.

The second is a new application for the Bernard Osher Scholarship. This one is a little different from our standard application, with different criteria and an entirely different time line. To qualify, students must have completed 24 units of degree-applicable study by the end of the fall, 2010 semester. They must also qualify for the BOG waiver and must enroll in at least six units at Cypress College for both the fall, 2011 and spring, 2012 semesters. The main thing with this scholarship is the timing. It will be awarded to the first qualifying students to turn in their applications to the Financial Aid office, so the sooner qualifying studens get this one turned in, the better their chances.

What's up with MyGateway?!?

If you're trying to register for classes, you've probably come across a situation where the Open Class List isn't working. How can I say that with such confidence? I think I've heard directly from all 20,000 students who have registration appointments for Cypress College (I exaggerate, but only slightly; OK, slightly more than slightly - but not by much).

The bottom line is that I know there's a lot of frustration out there. The whole IT team responsible for MyGateway knows it.

No amount of being sorry is going to eliminate frustration. I get that. With that, here is the latest:

The number one priority for the team is to keep the entire system up and running. To do that, they limit the number of users who can access MyGateway at any given time. This prevents (helps prevent) the system from crashing completely. Limiting users isn't great; crashing is bad - very, very bad.

The 'Search Class Schedules' available on the campus website and on the MyGateway login page is dynamic. It calls directly from the live database so students can see up-to-the-second availability of classes. 

Prior to this semester, Open Class List was a static list updated once an hour, and students complained that it was providing inaccurate, outdated information. Based on those complaints, it was replaced with the new direct database search.

On Monday, our District IT staff learned that the new search was accounting for, at times, up to 50% of the database load, and preventing students (as well as faculty and staff) from logging in to MyGateway at all.

This, of course, prevented students from being able to register at their appointed times.

At that point, IT added programming to the Searchable Schedule to disable it when the database load reaches a certain threshold. So, the link itself remains available at all times. However, if the system demand is too great when you do a search, it will display the message "Search temporarily disabled due to system load.  Please try again later."

When traffic on MyGateway subsides, the feature will automatically be available again.

IT staff is working on re-enabling the old 'Open Class List' as a backup during these peak-load times.

Students would then be re-directed to a static page of classes that were open at the last time the list was updated. When that's available, I'll let you know.

On a related note, I have been told that IT is asking our Board of Trustees to consider replacing the aging servers. Being financially responsible, IT has made extensive attempts to resolve the issues during recent registration periods. Those best efforts have resulted in the upcoming request for the new (expensive) equipment.

I'll close with this from our District Application Support Manager: "I'm fully aware of the frustrations that students are experiencing during these times.  We're doing our best to keep the system up."
