Starkville, Miss. — The National Fastpitch Coaches Association has announced that the Cypress College softball coaching staff, led by head coach Brad Pickler, has been named as the 2011 NFCA Cal JC National Coaching Staff of the Year for the second straight time, and third overall since 1997. The other coaches on Picklers' staff included first base coach Dennis Blas, Amanda Fernandez, Mike Hicks and Frank Mendoza.

The Chargers finished off the 2011 season by capturing their second California Community College State Championship in as many years, and seventh overall under Pickler. The back-to-back championships marked the first time the Chargers have repeated as the state's top team since Pickler led them to three-straight state crowns in the 1997-99 seasons.

Pickler and his staff guided the Chargers to a 42-8 overall mark, and a 10th consecutive Orange Empire Conference championship. It was the 22nd straight appearance for the Chargers in the State Tournament with Pickler at the helm - the Chargers failed to advance to the state tournament in 2001 when current Citrus head softball coach Jackie Boxley served as interim head coach for a season.

This year, Cypress wasn't the favorite heading into the State Tournament, but found a way to come up big when it counted.

Dominating performances in the circle by freshman Monique Hernandez — Most Valuable Pitcher of the State Tournament — and sophomore Mia Magalona, helped shut down some of the state's top offenses, while clutch hitting at the plate by nearly every Charger, including the tournament's Most Valuable Player, Jennifer Aanderud, propelled Cypress to a 3-0 undefeated run through some of the top teams in California.

As a team, Cypress outscored its opponents 18-2 in its three victories. The Chargers knocked off an undefeated San Joaquin Delta squad with a 5-1 victory in game one. In the second game of the tournament, Cypress blanked the state's top offense, Mt. SAC, with a 4-0 shutout, before cruising to a second straight state crown after routing Delta 9-1 in the championship game.

Sophomore centerfielder Brianne Webster led the Chargers in batting during the regular season with a .448 batting average and 50 runs scored. Webster earned national honors for her outstanding play when she was named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American team.

Sharing tasty news, courtesy of our new food services staff:

Dear members of the Cypress College community,

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Baja Fresh Express, Sbarro, and Cali Grille are now open in the dining room located inside the Student Center!

Our hours of operation are Mondays through Thursdays 7:45AM - 1:00PM during Summer Session.

Our Baja Fresh Express menu will be available for lunch starting at 10:00AM. We are offering most of the items you would typically find at your local Baja Fresh restaurant, at the same price or less! Everything on our menu is prepared fresh to order, you won't find us taking any short cuts here. We offer tacos, burritos, quesadilla, nachos, tostadas, and much more! This week, we are featuring our new Wahoo (Ono) fish tacos prepared crispy or grilled! Try it with our Six-Chili Salsa with roasted Roma Tomatoes - its spicy!

Our Sbarro menu includes gigantic pizza slices (topping may vary), Stromboli (rolled up calzone), salads and pastas. We take pride in preparing our own dough the old fashion way and we bake our pizzas in a huge stone oven. Why go though all this trouble? Because we believe that you can really taste the difference. Try a slice of pizza today!

Our Cali Grille menu is offering Breakfast Burritos this month (until 11AM). It features a fresh cracked egg with bacon, ham, hash brown and cheese for only $3.99! Pair it with our Seattle's Best coffee for $1.39 (Small) to get your day started off right! For lunch we are offering "Make Your Own" sandwich for $4.59 and double the sandwich to a 12" for $2.00 more! If you are looking for something lighter and healthier, you can substitute the bread for a bowl of Spring Mix salad and select your own meat and cheese! Top off your salad with avocado slices for $0.99.

We hope to see you soon!

A short while ago, I received this email from the college registrar:

Today, Thursday (7/21), is the deadline for dismissed students to submit a Dismissal Petition for Exception. This includes the submission of any supporting documentation (medical bills, hospital/physician recommendations, official transcripts from other institutions, official notices from legal entities or other dated and official correspondence). Petitions or supporting documentation will not be accepted if submitted after today.

By July 28, students who appealed their dismissal will receive a College response by email informing them if their petition was approved or denied.

Admissions and Records is open until 6:00 pm today. Thank you.

Students who are facing academic dismissal have already been apprised of the situation, so if you're unaware, you're most likely not in that situation. You can always verify your enrollment information in MyGateway.

Admissions and Records can be reached by phone at (714) 484-7346. They utilize call center software to help route calls to appropriately skilled staff, so please listen to the prompts. A&R is located on the first floor of the Student Center. You can visit Line A there.

More information is available in this .pdf document.
