Cypress, California, July 22, 2010 — Union Bank, N.A., has strengthened its partnership with Cypress College, agreeing to serve as the title sponsor of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 Americana Awards. Union Bank has a long-standing leadership role at the college with representation on the Cypress College Foundation Board of Directors.  Union Bank’s three-year commitment to Cypress College totals $75,000.

“We are extremely grateful for Union Bank’s tremendous support, especially considering the unprecedented economic situation facing California’s community colleges,” Cypress College President Dr. Michael J. Kasler said. “Union Bank has graciously supported Cypress with membership on our Foundation board of directors for a number of years. We appreciate the leadership provided by Miriam Melville, Vice President and Branch Manager, Cypress Office and Steve Rizutto, Senior Vice President, Retail Sales Integration Manager before her. Cypress College is honored by Union Bank’s wonderful philanthropy.”

Dr. Kasler expressed gratitude for Union Bank executive, and Cypress College alumnus, Pierre Habis: “His leadership in facilitating the title sponsorship is greatly appreciated.”

“Union Bank is committed to supporting our communities and education at every level,” said Senior Executive Vice President Pierre P. Habis, head of Community Banking for Union Bank and a 1990 graduate of Cypress College. “A college education is critical to helping young adults succeed in a variety of industries, and we will continue to encourage advanced education and community involvement.”

The Americana Awards Banquet is the Cypress College Foundation’s signature event. Held annually since America’s Bicentennial celebration, the Americana Awards recognize local citizens for their work in the community. Proceeds from Americana fill a number of financial needs at Cypress College — including scholarships, emergency assistance, book loans, the “Mini Grants” program and other college initiatives that wouldn’t otherwise be funded.

Cypress College’s Foundation is governed by a 30-member board of community leaders, including current president Bill Garcia, region manager, Business Services Western Education and Government Operations at Xerox, and incoming-president Michael Cooper, director of sourcing and procurement at Disney Worldwide Services. The executive director of the Foundation and Community Relations at Cypress College is Raul Alvarez.
