Cypress, Calif. – It was not pretty but it was a win as Cypress beat up on Fullerton 6-1 to open Orange Empire Conference play. Cypress out-shot the Hornets 36-4 to overload Fullerton with offense. Sophomore midfielder Brittney Elder scored a goal and notched two assists in the first half to lead Cypress.
Cypress wasted no time when freshman forward Nydia Hurtado scored in the seventh minute with an assist from Elder to take the 1-0 lead. Just four minutes later, Elder made another assist to sophomore forward Yvonne Vasquez. A mere eight minutes after their second goal, Elder decided to score a goal of her own assisted by freshman midfielder Jessie Banos. After a Fullerton penalty, sophomore defender Cassie McKay converted the penalty kick giving Cypress their fourth goal after just 26 minutes of play. The Chargers were blanked the rest of the half.
The second half started much like the first with a goal in the 46th minute by freshman midfielder Dani Castro from sophomore midfielder Tiffany Craig. The Chargers could not convert for the next half hour until their sixth and final goal from Banos from McKay. Fullerton scored just one goal.
This is Cypress’s seventh straight win preserving their perfect record this season. The Chargers return home Friday to host Golden West for another conference match-up. The Rustlers are 1-4 and coming off of a 0-5 loss to Riverside. The teams will face off Friday at 3:00 pm at Cypress.
