Cypress Takes Charge of First Place with Win over OCC

Cypress, Calif. – Both Cypress and Orange Coast went into Friday’s match boasting three wins and no losses in conference play putting them in a tie for first in the Orange Empire Conference. The Pirates lived up to their names making it a physical game with two yellow cards but Cypress fought through it with a 5-0 win. Freshman midfielder Jessie Banos punched in two goals to boost the Chargers.
Banos was the Chargers’ first scorer scoring on a header in the 25th minute from sophomore defender Denise Oates. Fifteen minutes later, sophomore forward Yvonne Vasquez managed to bypass the Pirate defenders to take the 2-0 lead before being taken out before the half because of injury. After the half, sophomore defender Cassie McKay took advantage of a penalty kick for the Chargers’ third goal. Banos scored again in the 77th minute from a pass in front of the goal from sophomore midfielder Lauren Hess. Freshman midfielder Diana Gallegos scored the fifth and final goal just before the end of the game with an assist from freshman midfielder Karina Gutierrez. Freshman keeper Kassandra Imbrogno notched her seventh shutout this season pulling down four saves.
The Chargers look to maintain their number one national ranking Tuesday as they host Saddleback. The Gauchos are 2-5-1 and 0-2-1 in conference in eighth place. The teams face off Tuesday at 3:00 pm at Cypress.
