Martinez Draws a Full House to Lift Cypress to a Blowout

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress was beat up, but they were not about to let it be an excuse as they scored three goals in each half on the way to a 6-0 victory over Irvine Valley. The Chargers were led by freshman midfielder Amanda Martinez who not only notched a hat trick with three goals but managed to assist on another two.

The Chargers came into Tuesday’s game beat up after postponing their game the previous Friday because of an accident on the way out to Riverside. Four men down and on the verge of a three game week, Cypress answered the challenge with six goals to start the week. “They played a great game considering what happened Friday,” said head coach Tracy Van Herk, “All the girls had to fill a lot of holes and they did it”. Freshman midfielder Xenia Guerra started the action off with her first collegiate goal after 24 minutes of play with an assist from freshman defender Kristen Mosier. Four minutes later, sophomore captain Tiffany Craig scored with an assist from Martinez. Martinez netted her first goal shortly after from sophomore defender Denise Oates giving Cypress a comfortable 3-0 lead into halftime.

Martinez started the second half like she ended the first, with a goal in the 51st minute from freshman midfielder Dani Castro. Freshman midfielder Jessie Banos scored next from Martinez five minutes later. Martinez scored her third and final goal with an assist from freshman Karina Gutierrez. Freshman keeper Kassandra Imbrogno picked up her fifth straight shutout with two saves.

Cypress has no time off as they try again at Riverside Wednesday for their makeup game. The two face off Wednesday at 3:00 pm at Riverside.
