Craig’s Hat Trick Propels Cypress to 7-0 Victory

Cypress, Calif. – After two ties last week, the Chargers started the second round of conference with a statement in a 7-0 shutout win over Fullerton. This is the Chargers’ second win over Fullerton this season. Sophomore midfielder Tiffany Craig notched a hat trick with three goals on the day to lead the Chargers.

The action began in the ninth minute when freshman midfielder Brittney LoBello scored her first collegiate goal with an assist from Brittney Elder. In the twentieth minute, freshman midfielder Amanda Martinez made a billiards style goal off the far post and into the near net for the Chargers’ second goal. Before the first half was over, Craig was able to put in her first goal of the day with an assist from Yvonne Vasquez, back from a five game injury absence.

Cypress went into the second half with a 3-0 lead and were about to stretch it further. Sophomore defender Cassie McKay took a free kick and floated it over the Hornet goalie to score in the 54th minute and Craig added her second goal in the 65th minute. Freshman midfielder Kelsey Chavarria took a rebounded corner kick in for the sixth goal. Craig finished the day off with her third, and the Chargers’ seventh goal with an assist from Chavarria right before time could expire. Freshman keeper Kassandra Imbrogno maintained the shutout despite an aggressive Fullerton offense with four saves including a spectacular diving save in the second half.

Cypress improves to 8-0-2 in conference and is holding on to second place in the Orange Empire Conference. The Chargers head to Golden West Tuesday to face off with the Rustlers for the second time this season. Last time the two met, Cypress won 7-0. Golden West is winless in conference so far coming off of a 0-2 loss to Riverside. The Chargers head to Golden West Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
