Costa Mesa, Calif. – The Chargers were seeing red after an upset loss last week and they made Orange Coast their first victims with a shutout win. Cypress made it their mission to not be upset again and to make a statement with the 6-0 blowout. Freshman midfielder Diana Gallegos led the Chargers with two goals and an assist.
Gallegos’s two goals were boosted by a goal each from sophomore midfielders Tiffany Craig, and Brittney Elder, sophomore defender Cassie McKay, and freshman midfielder Karina Gutierrez’s first collegiate goal. Briana Covarrubias, Yvonne Vasquez, Gallegos, and Craig all contributed assists. Freshman keeper Kassandra Imbrogno collected three saves while shutting out the Pirates.
Cypress holds their spot in second place, two points behind Santiago Canyon and seven points ahead of Riverside and Orange Coast. The Chargers move on to Friday where they will stay on the road to face the sixth place Saddleback Gauchos. Saddleback is 4-5-2 in conference coming off of a 2-1 win over Fullerton. The last time Cypress played the Gauchos, the Chargers won 2-0. The teams face off again Friday at 3:00 pm at Saddleback.
