Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers looked like they were in for another disappointing tie against Riverside on Halloween with sixteen shots on goal and not a goal to show for it. It was not until the 87th minute on a freak ricochet goal that Cypress was finally able to convert and lock in the win. Freshman midfielder Amanda Martinez picked up the winning assist to propel the Chargers to the win.

The Chargers looked poised for a revenge win attacking the Riverside goal repeatedly. Cypress had sixteen shots on goal including several ripe corner kick opportunities but repeatedly came up short with near misses and Riverside goalie saves leaving Cypress scoreless. At the 87th minute, the Chargers had another missed corner kick opportunity which was booted just outside the penalty box to Martinez who kicked a desperation ball towards the goal. The goal ricocheted off injured player Yvonne Vasquez who was on the ground in front of a Riverside defender and the goal to hop over the goalie’s head in for the winning goal. The momentum carried Cypress as they earned a penalty kick for sophomore defender Cassie McKay who converted it for the second Cypress goal.

With this win, Cypress holds on to second place with two more regular season games remaining and first in the Southern Region in power points. They move on next to visit last place Irvine Valley. The last time these teams met, Cypress won 6-0. The teams face off Friday at Irvine Valley at 3:00 pm.
