Cypress, Calif. – Santiago Canyon came to Cypress Tuesday ranked number one in the nation with an undefeated record looking to extend their unbeaten streak. Cypress came in ranked fifth in the nation after a few stumbles and a tie with Santiago earlier this season looking to pull off an upset. Cypress did just that scoring two goals and holding the Hawks to one for the victory in front of a large crowd of both Cypress and Santiago fans. Freshman keeper Kassandra Imbrogno pulled in six impressive saves including a few down the stretch to hold the Hawks to their one goal maintaining the Cypress lead.

The Chargers attacked first with a goal by sophomore midfielder Tiffany Craig in the 25th minute from freshman midfielder Amanda Martinez. Santiago came back in the 38th minute earning a free kick right outside the box and scoring in the corner. Cypress caught the Hawks celebrating right after and Craig scored the Charger’s second goal just a minute after the Santiago score with an assist from freshman midfielder Diana Gallegos. Cypress went into half time with the 2-1 lead. The second half was a back and forth battle with several close calls on both goals. Imbrogno made some impressive saves to keep the Hawks scoreless in the second half and hold on to the lead for the win. “The girls played with heart,” said head coach Tracy Van Herk, “they will take this momentum to State.”

Cypress has a bye Friday and will probably finish conference play in second place behind Santiago Canyon. From there, the Chargers will await playoff seedings with Cypress unofficially in first place in power points in the state. The first round of playoffs begins on Saturday November 18th which Cypress is likely to host.
