Cypress, Calif. – Cypress made it a carbon copy score of their last playoff game on Tuesday with a 3-0 defeat of ninth seed Santa Barbara. The Chargers’ win moves them on to the third and final round of Southern California Regionals with just eight teams remaining alive in the state. Sophomore defender Cassie McKay paced Cypress with an assist and a goal.
Cypress attacked early with several shots on goal including a goal in the seventh minute that was taken away because of an offsides call and one that hit the post in the fourteenth minute. Cypress was finally able to convert in the twentieth minute with a goal from freshman midfielder Briana Covarrubias with an assist from Mckay. Mckay contributed again in the 39th minute with a free kick from just outside the box which bent into the far end to score Cypress’s second goal for the 2-0 lead at halftime. Cypress was able to add one more in the second half with a goal from sophomore point leader Brittney Elder with an assist from sophomore forward Yvonne Vasquez to lock in the victory. Freshman keeper Kassandra Imbrogno picked up two saves for another shutout.
The Chargers improve to 22-1-2 and move on to face conference rivals Orange Coast College. This will be their third match-up this year. Cypress has won both of the previous games this season 5-0 and 6-0. Orange Coast reached the third round with victories over Ventura and then Santa Monica 1-0 in both matches. The teams will face off again Saturday December 2nd in the Charger sophomores’ last home game of their career at 2:00 pm. The winner moves on to the final four at the State Championships in Fresno.
