Cypress on Their Way to the Final Four in Fresno

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress had shut out all of their playoff opponents thus far and would keep the streak going Saturday against the Pirates. Cypress propelled themselves to the State Championships Saturday after winning their third straight playoff game in a shut out 6-0. The Chargers faced Orange Empire rivals Orange Coast for the third time this season and shut the Pirates out for the third time this season. Sophomore forward Yvonne Vasquez played her last home game of her career at Cypress topping it off with two goals and an assist to lead Cypress to the State Championships.

The Chargers added one to the board early with a goal from freshman defender Kirsten Mosier from Nydia Hurtado in the third minute. Vasquez contributed her first goal just eleven minutes later with an assist from fellow sophomore Tiffany Craig. Craig finished off the half with a goal of her own with assist from sophomore defender Denise Oates to give Cypress the commanding 3-0 halftime lead. Vasquez started the action in the second half with the Chargers’ fourth goal with an assist from Hurtado for her second assist. Charger point leader poured on another at the seventy minute mark with an assist from Vasquez. Freshman midfielder Kelsey Chavarria was not to be left out scoring in the 79th minute with an assist from Diana Gallegos. Freshman keeper Kassandra Imbrogno notched her 19th career shutout at Cypress. One more shutout would put Imbrogno at a tie for the Charger record for shutouts in a season.

Cypress moves on to the State Championships at Fresno Pacific this Friday against De Anza College. De Anza upset three straight teams to reach the State Semi-Finals starting with a number nine seed. De Anza defeated fourth seed Modesto in penalty kicks to reach the final four. The teams face off for the right to play in the championship game this Friday at 1:00 pm at Fresno Pacific University.
