5-0 Blowout Sends Cypress to the Championship Rivalry Match

Fresno, Calif. – Cypress headed to Fresno for the State Championship semi-final match. The pressure and weight of the game did not seem the phase the Chargers as they made it business as usual shutting out their fourth straight opponent for the 5-0 victory over De Anza, the second seeded team from the North. Sophomore midfielder Tiffany Craig became Cypress’s leading goal scorer this season scoring Cypress’s second and third goals for 20 total goals this season. This win propels Cypress into the Championship match Sunday against Orange Empire Conference rivals Santiago Canyon.
The action started with three goals in quick succession toward the end of the first half. Sophomore point leader Brittney Elder started the action with a header goal from freshman defender Kristen Mosier. Three minutes later, Craig scored her first goal off a header with an assist from freshman midfielder Jessie Banos. Craig waited just another three minutes later for her second goal with another header with a corner kick assist from sophomore defender Cassie McKay to give Cypress a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.
Cypress waited till the end of the second half to add to their lead with a goal from sophomore forward Yvonne Vasquez with an assist from freshman midfielder Diana Gallegos. The fifth and final dagger in De Anza came from freshman midfielder Dani Castro on a breakaway. Freshman keeper Kassandra Imbrogno picked up her 20th shutout, a Cypress record, pulling in two saves.
Cypress moves on to the Championship match Sunday against longtime rivals Santiago Canyon. Santiago has also gone on a tear through the playoffs outscoring their opponents 20-0. The Hawks are 20-1-1 so far this season with their only tie and loss coming from the Chargers during Orange Empire Conference play. The season concludes Sunday at 2:00 at Fresno Pacific in a face off between two rivals for one championship.
