Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers had bad luck with the Tigers in 2006 getting into a car accident on the way to Riverside and then tying with them in the rescheduled game. This year Cypress hopes to complete the sweep and started on the right foot with a 2-0 home win. Sophomore defender Amanda Martinez was all smiles as she made her return to the field after being sidelined with an injury early in the season. The returning all-conference defender’s comeback was solidified with a penalty goal, her first goal this season.
Cypress came out of the gates shooting attacking the Riverside goal repeatedly in the first half. The attempts were close but were just missing the mark as the half wore on scoreless. Finally, in the 41st minute, sophomore defender Brianna Covarrubias sent a ball down the line to freshman Natalie Farah who dribbled it through the box and sent a goal to the far post giving Cypress the 1-0 lead. After the half, Cypress scored again in the 63rd minute when freshman midfielder Jessica McMaster was fouled in the box and Martinez scored the penalty kick for Cypress’s second goal. Sophomore keeper Kassandra Imbrogno earned the shutout and made two saves on the day.
The Chargers improve to 4-1-1 in conference. With Saddleback’s loss, Cypress takes sole possession of second place. They will take a couple days off to prepare for a road game Friday at Orange Coast. The teams face off Friday at 3:00 pm at Orange Coast.
