Fortunes Turn Quickly in Charger Rout

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress is not used to being behind, but that was just the situation they found themselves in Tuesday afternoon after the Chargers gave up the first goal of the game to Orange Coast finding themselves behind 1-0. The Pirates lead would not last long as Cypress tied it up just a minute later and then go on a scoring spree for the 6-1 win. Sophomore midfielder Dani Castro contributed two goals and an assist to lead the Chargers.

Cypress started slow going back and forth with Orange Coast until the Pirates woke Cypress up with a goal in the fourteenth minute. The Chargers bounced back as Castro scored just a minute later with a pass from freshman forward Catrina Flores. Cypress was not satisfied with the tie scoring just two minutes later with a penalty kick from freshman defender Samantha Jones. The Chargers paced themselves from there waiting until the 37th minute when Castro scored again with an assist from freshman midfielder Maureen Murphy. Three minutes later, freshman midfielder Jackiee Roman put one in with an assist from Castro for the 4-1 first half lead. Ten minutes into the second half, sophomore midfielder Karina Gutierrez scored with an assist from Jones. Freshman forward Natalie Farah finished it out with a rebounded goal with an assist from freshman midfielder Cynthia Fernandez. Freshman keeper Tracy Pabigian played the entire game making two saves.

Cypress improves to 16-2-3 and 12-2-1 in conference. They have one more regular season game before the post season. The Chargers are currently ranked sixth in Southern California. If the standings hold, Cypress should host their first round match-up in playoffs. Cypress just has to get by Fullerton on Thursday. The last time the teams met, Cypress won 6-1. This time, the teams will meet at Fullerton at 1:00 pm Thursday.
