Cypress Slips by Santa Monica to Charge into Second Round Clash with Santiago Canyon

Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers started Southern California Regional action Saturday afternoon taking on the 14th seed Corsairs of Santa Monica. Cypress survived the matchup with a 1-0 shutout to move on to the second round. Freshman goalie Whitney Joslin picked stopped the high scoring Corsairs with five saves for her thirteenth straight shutout of the year.

Cypress started the game aggressive with several close calls keeping the ball on the Santa Monica half of the field. The Chargers finally came through in the 35th minute with a goal off a corner kick. Freshman midfielder Amanda LoBello flicked the ball behind her and sophomore midfielder Diana Gallegos followed by converting to goal for the 1-0 lead.

The second half was less fortunate for Cypress as the Corsairs pushed toward the Charger goal. A few close calls and saves from Joslin kept Santa Monica scoreless as time ran out and Cypress survived.

Cypress improves to 18-1-4 and moves on to the second round of playoffs. The Chargers will take on the sixth seed Hawks of Santiago Canyon next. Cypress defeated rival SCC 1-0 in their most recent matchup and tied them 0-0 earlier in the season. The Hawks are 16-2-4 and are coming off of a 4-1 first round win over Grossmont. The two will meet up for the third and final time this season Tuesday at 2:00 pm at Cypress for a berth into the third round.
