Cypress, Calif. – Cypress and Santiago Canyon faced off for the second time this season in a highly anticipated rivalry match. After a 3-2 loss to the Hawks earlier this season, Cypress was looking for revenge but came up just short 2-1. Freshman forward Vanesa Corona scored Cypress’s only goal.
The Hawks struck first with a goal ten minutes in. From there, Cypress controlled the ball keeping the action on the Santiago half of the field. At the 35 minute mark, sophomore forward Casey Kiehl sent a pass up field to sophomore midfielder Ariana Olague. Olague drew a foul in the box setting up Corona for the penalty which she converted sending the teams into a tied 1-1 half.
The teams went back and forth to start the second half. Cypress took control as time went on with several near misses. Santiago Canyon found a chance and broke away and drew a controversial foul in the penalty box. The Hawks converted the penalty kick in the 80th minute to take the lead.
