Cypress Starts 2010 Strong

Angelica Silva Silva scored twice Friday afternoon.
The Chargers kicked off the 2010 season with a 4-0 shutout.

San Diego, Calif. – The Chargers began their 2010 campaign Friday on the road taking on San Diego Mesa. Cypress was scoreless in the first half but made a statement in the second on the way to a 4-0 shutout. Sophomore forward Angelica Silva led Cypress with two goals on the day. Cypress controlled the ball and the pace of the game throughout to set the tone for the rest of the season.

After a scoreless first half, freshman forward Kayla Arenas was fouled in the box in the 46th minute setting up a penalty kick for Cypress. Sophomore forward Vanesa Corona took the kick and came up with the goal for the 1-0 lead. In the 57th minute, freshman forward Megan Ollar passed to freshman forward Jacqueline Lara for her first collegiate goal. Within ten minutes, Cypress mounted a counter attack that ended in a header goal by Silva off a cross from sophomore midfielder Jessica Murphy. Silva finished it off with the fourth goal of the day shot from in the box with an assist from freshman forward Chelsea Braudo. Sophomore keeper Chelsea Broghamer was in the goal for the first half making one save. Freshman keeper Kayla Neujahr handled the second half making two saves.

Cypress (1-0) has a week off before heading to Mt. Sac to take on the Mounties. The two will meet Friday at 6:00 pm at Mt. Sac.
