Cypress Collects 10 Runs in Second Win

Santa Clarita, Calif. - Cypress moved into their second game of the day and their season Saturday facing off with Palomar. Cypress waited till the third inning before producing six runs to eventually win by mercy rule 10-1. Sophomore third baseman Gabrielle Woody made it a career afternoon with a career high 5 RBI going 3 for 4 at the plate including a double and two runs scored.
The Charger bats rested the first two innings and woke up in the third taking advantage of four hits and two Comet errors. Sophomore center fielder Jade Espinoza started things out with a single. Sophomore Alyssa Gutierrez followed reaching first on an error. Sophomore catcher Brooke Pefley hit a fielder’s choice that should have thrown Gutierrez out but she reached second safely on an error. Freshman shortstop Ashley Boyd took over from there with her first career RBI on a single to score Espinoza. Woody would collect her first couple of RBI on the day with a single that would score Gutierrez and Pefley. Sophomore left fielder Sabrina Hernandez was next to reach on a fielder’s choice which threw out Boyd at the plate. Freshman second baseman Christina Gonzales would be next moving to first on a walk to load the bases. Freshman designated player Andrea Toledo blasted her first collegiate triple to score Woody, Hernandez, and Gonzalez giving Cypress the 6-0 lead.
Cypress would score again the very next inning. Gutierrez walked to reach first and Boyd singled to move Gutierrez to second. Woody collected her third RBI of the day to score Gutierrez. The Chargers put the nail in the coffin in the sixth. Freshman catcher Jessica Lupinetti walked to reach first. Boyd belted a double to move Lupinetti to third. Woody capped it off with a doubled to score Lupinetti and Boyd. Woody would move to third on a stolen base and Gonzalez doubled to score Woody giving Cypress the 10-1 lead. The Palomar batters were retired in order in the sixth including two strikeouts to end the game via mercy rule. Gutierrez made her 2007 pitching debut pitching a complete game allowing just three hits with no walks, no earned runs, and striking out five.
Cypress improves to 2-0 and has a few days off before heading to Long Beach City. The Vikings are 2-3 so far this season coming off of a 1-8 loss to Bakersfield. The teams will face off at Long Beach, Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
