Chargers Squeak out a Win in Home Opener

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress hosted their first game of the 2007 season Friday hosting conference opponents Riverside. The Chargers held out till the seventh inning for a walk-off RBI to defeat the Tigers 1-0. Sophomore left fielder Sabrina Hernandez produced the game winning RBI giving Cypress their second conference win.

The Chargers found themselves in a jam in the first as Riverside started the game with a triple. Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Gutierrez got herself out of the jam by striking out the next two and forcing a pop out for the third out. Cypress had a similar opportunity in their first chance at the plate as sophomore catcher Brooke Pefley doubled and moved to third. Unfortunately for Cypress, Pefley was stranded leaving the score locked at zero. Riverside continued to threaten with runners in scoring position in the third and fifth, but Cypress defense kicked in just in time to strand the runners.

Cypress had another opportunity in the sixth with freshman designated hitter Caitlin McGrath singling and stealing two bases to reach third. McGrath was thrown out at the plate on a fielder’s choice ending the Cypress scoring threat. The Chargers’ time finally came in the seventh as freshman shortstop Ashley Boyd started the inning with a single and stole second. Sophomore third baseman Gabrielle Woody laid down a well placed sacrifice bunt moving Boyd to third. Hernandez was next up hitting one to short to score Boyd giving Cypress the 1-0 lead to end the game. Gutierrez earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the season maintaining her 0.00 ERA.

Cypress goes on the road to College of the Sequoias next to go through four straight games of tough competition. The Chargers begin with 7-2 Sierra. The two face off Sunday at 12:15 pm at College of the Sequoias.
