Chargers Close out Sequoias Trip with a 9-0 Shutout

Final Stats
Visalia, Calif. - The Chargers finished their weekend trip at College of the Sequioas against thirteenth ranked Reedley Monday afternoon. Cypress kept up their scoring momentum and shutout the Tigers for the 9-0 victory. Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Gutierrez led from the mound and the plate with 3 RBI on 2 hits including a double while shutting out the Tigers from the mound to improve to 4-1.
Cypress started strong in the first with three runs. Freshman shortstop Ashley Boyd started the game off with a walk. Sophomore catcher Brooke Pefley started the hitting with a single moving Boyd to second. Gutierrez was next at bat and doubled to score Pefley and Boyd. Sophomore left fielder Sabrina Hernandez added the third run with a single to score Gutierrez to begin the game up 3-0. The Chargers added another in the second. Freshman designated hitter Jessica Lupinetti singled to start the inning. Freshman second baseman Christina Gonzales laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Lupinetti into scoring position. Boyd then added a single to score Lupinetti giving Cypress the 4-0 lead.
The Chargers were able to generate another three run inning in the third. Gutierrez reached on a walk and then second a wild pitch. Hernandez reached next after being hit by a pitch and the runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Lupinetti then lined out on a sacrifice fly to score Gutierrez. Next, Gonzales singled to score Hernandez. Finally, sophomore center fielder Jade Espinoza batted in the seventh run with a single to score sophomore right fielder Kristen Aufdemberg who had originally reached on a walk.
Cypress took a couple innings off from scoring until adding two in the sixth. Espinoza started the inning with a single. Boyd added a double next to put a man on first and third. Pefley then lined out for a sacrifice fly scoring Espinoza. Gutierrez then added her last RBI of the game with a single to score Boyd. The Tigers failed to score again in the sixth ending the game on the eight run rule.
Cypress improves to 8-1 and return home to Cypress Wednesday. The Chargers go back to conference play facing the ninth ranked Dons of Santa Ana. Santa Ana are 6-3 and 1-0 in conference. The two will face off Wednesday at Cypress at 3:00 pm.
